Protein Bagels Recipe

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe·Leave a Review

Hey everyone, Michael Carter here from Easy Recipes List! Okay, confession time. I love bagels. Like, seriously love them. But, you know, being a nutrition guy and trying to stay healthy, I always felt a little guilty indulging. All those carbs! It’s a constant battle, right? So, I went on a mission. A mission to create a bagel that I could enjoy without the guilt. And let me tell you, I think I’ve cracked the code with this protein bagel recipe! ✨

I’ve been diving deep into sourdough lately – it’s a whole other world, honestly, sometimes a frustrating one! – and while I adore the process, sometimes you just need something quick. Something that doesn’t require a starter and days of nurturing. Speaking of quick and easy treats, if you’re looking for something sweet to go with your bagel (or maybe after!), you absolutely have to check out my Easy Coffee Chocolate Cake and this crazy-good Diet Coke and Cake Mix recipe – seriously, don’t knock it ‘til you try it! And if you’re like me and love a good bagel base, you might also enjoy my Cottage Cheese Bagel recipe for another fun twist. But back to bagels…

I was thinking about this the other day, actually, while I was prepping for a shoot. I was trying to come up with a really satisfying breakfast for a video, something that would keep people full and energized. And it hit me: why not a bagel? But a healthy bagel. And that’s how this protein bagel recipe was born. It’s perfect for meal prepping, too. Make a batch on Sunday, and you’ve got breakfast sorted for the whole week. Trust me, your busy mornings will thank you.

Protein Bagel Mixing

Now, I know what you might be thinking: baking powder bagels? Really? But honestly, they’re amazing. They have a slightly different texture than traditional yeast bagels – a little more cakey, a little less chewy – but they’re still incredibly satisfying. And the best part? They’re so easy to make. You don’t need any fancy equipment or skills. If you can mix flour, salt, and yogurt, you can make these. It’s that simple.

I’ve been experimenting with different toppings, too. Sesame seeds are my go-to – I’m a creature of habit, I admit! – but everything bagel seasoning is fantastic, and I’ve even tried dehydrated garlic and poppy seeds. You can really get creative here. I’ve even seen people adding shredded cheese before baking! I’m thinking Asiago might be next on my list. And if you’re an air fryer fan, you’re in luck! You can totally bake these in the air fryer. It’s even faster! This protein bagel recipe is seriously versatile.

Protein Bagel Preparing

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about the Greek yogurt. I prefer full-fat for the best flavor and texture, but 2% or even 0% will work. And yes, vegan Greek yogurt will work too! I haven’t tested it myself, but I’ve heard great things. The key is to use a thick, creamy yogurt. It’s what gives these bagels their structure. And don’t worry, there’s no weird protein powder or anything like that in this protein bagel recipe! Just simple, wholesome ingredients.

Baked Protein Bagel

And speaking of simple, let’s talk about the flour. I usually use all-purpose, but bread flour will also work. Bread flour has a higher protein content, which will give you a slightly crispier bagel. But honestly, either one will work just fine. Don’t stress about it! The goal here is to make cooking fun and easy, remember? “Fun, Easier Life!” – that’s my motto, and I stand by it.

The easiest high protein bagels you’ll ever make!  These 5-ingredient bagels are packed with 10 grams of protein per bagel and perfect for a quick, healthy breakfast.

  • Author: Michael Carter
  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Cook Time: 20 minutes + 10 minutes (resting)
  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x
  • Category: Breakfast
  • Cuisine: American

Ingredients

Scale

2¼ cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)

4 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1½ cup Greek yogurt

1 egg white, lightly beaten

Sesame seeds or everything bagel seasoning

Instructions

  1. PREP: Position a rack in the center of the oven and preheat the oven to 350ºF. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.
  2. MIX: In a bowl, whisk the dry ingredients until mixed. Then add the Greek yogurt and mix together until a dough forms. You might want to use your hands to make this easier!
  3. DIVIDE: Turn the dough out onto a clean surface. Divide it out into 6 equal pieces. If the dough is sticky dust with flour, I didn’t need to.
  4. ROLL: Roll out the dough into a thick rope, about 7-8 inches in length. Join the ends and gently press. Place your hand through the hole gently roll the joining part on the counter so that the ends fuse. Place the bagels on the prepared baking sheet and let sit for 5-10 minutes if possible. This allows the bagels to puff up more.
  5. BRUSH AND SPRINKLE: On a clean plate, place one bagel, brush with the beaten egg white. Sprinkle with sesame seeds or bagel seasoning. Place the bagel on the baking sheet and repeat with the remaining bagels.
  6. BAKE: Place the pan in the oven and bake the bagels for 20-25 minutes or golden brown on top. Remove the bagels to a wire rack and let them rest for 10 minutes or until cooled so you can slice them. Toast if desired and spread with cream cheese.

Notes

  • typically keep on hand. Replace the flour, baking powder, and most of the kosher salt with 2¼ cups self-rising flour. You’ll still need ¼ teaspoon of salt in addition to the flour!
  • Seasonings: You can use an array of seasoning for these bagels. Dehydrated garlic or onion would work too. If you use an everything bagel seasoning with salt, you might want to cut the salt back to ¾ teaspoon to keep the bagels from being too salty.
  • Air Fryer Directions: Preheat the air fryer to 300ºF for at least 5 minutes. Then add the bagels and air fry them for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown on top and cooked through.
  • Variations: If you want to try a variation on this recipe, try my Jalapeño and Cheddar Bagels! They’re made almost exactly the same way!
